Application Procedures

American Studies admits for graduate study at the Ph. D. level only. Ph.D. students may obtain a M.A. during the course of their studies, but no students are admitted for a terminal M.A. Students entering the Ph.D. program must hold at least a Bachelor's level degree from a recognized institution of higher education. The deadline for application to the American Studies Department is December 1 of the year prior to intended entry.

Admission to the Graduate Program requires that prospective students complete two applications: 1) the Department of American Studies application, and 2) the University of Minnesota Graduate School application. You are strongly encouraged to request a graduate application packet which contains additional information which may not be easily accessible on the web by contacting the Department of American Studies office
Phone: 612-624-4190 or Email: amstdy@umn.edu or by post to:

A Complete American Studies Department Application Requires Additional Materials

Various kinds of financial support are available. Once all of the required information is received, applicants will automatically be considered for American Studies Department financial support. However, some fellowships require an additional statement. Click on Financial Support Information for details.

All financial support packages awarded through the Graduate School and American Studies are based on academic merit. Most need-based financial aid, such as student loans, may be obtained through the financial aid office after students have been admitted for graduate study.
