About the Honors Experiential Events Option
The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.
--Eleanor Roosevelt
Wake up and live, ya!
--Bob Marley
Goal: To encourage students in the Freshman-Sophomore Honors Program to immerse themselves in a cornucopia of optional academic, cultural, and educational events happening outside the typical classroom.
How to Participate:
First- and second-year Honors-CLA students are welcome to join in any approved experiential events listed on the Honors Events Calendar and Descriptions page.
Attending a minimum of four attended events, each culminating with a typed response, will constitute one of the honors opportunities required for the Freshman-Sophomore Honors Program.
To account for your participation, you must email Rebecca Dosch-Brown (dosch018@umn.edu) prior to attendance, letting her know which event (title, date & time) you plan to attend.
Response Timeline:
Within a week after an attended event, email Rebecca Dosch-Brown(dosch018@umn.edu) with your insights. Possible questions to consider while you write are: Do you think the event fairly portrayed its subject or theme, or were there discrepancies or biases in the presentation? What was most/least compelling to you? Was anything thought-provoking, inspiring, or unsettling? Provide concrete details.
Response Format:
Single-space your typed response, with 1-inch margins, size-12 font, 350-450 words. Include your name, ID number, email address, plus the title & date of attended event. Papers should demonstrate depth-of-thought and creativity.
We will notify you via email whether or not your paper has been approved. If it has not been approved, you may revise and re-submit it within one week of the date of notification. Please keep copies of both your work and our emails on file.
