The John E. Turner Award was established to
recognize the best undergraduate CLA Honors
project. This year's award will be announced
in Spring 2006 and is for the best undergraduate
Honors project completed during the 2005
calendar year. Nominations are made by departments.
Nominations typically are of summa theses, but
it is up to each department to determine which
Honors project it nominates.
Established
through contributions from colleagues, friends,
and former students, the award honors Regents'
Professor Emeritus John E. Turner for his commitment
to students and academic excellence. There is
a small cash award as well as a plaque for the
winning student. There is also a plaque listing
all winners, which resides in the Honors office.
The 2004 John E. Turner Award winner is Kelly Kasper.
Procedures:
1.
Each CLA department or academic program may
nominate one student. To be eligible, students
must have completed their Honors project during
the 2005 calendar year and must have graduated
from the University of Minnesota.
2. The department should submit a letter of
nomination which includes the student's name
and ID number, the title of the paper, and
the reasons why the department is nominating
the project for the Turner Award. Nominating
letters which explain the project's originality,
creativity, importance, etc., can be particularly
helpful. A copy of the project should also
be submitted.
3. A faculty committee will review the projects
and nomination letters and choose a recipient
of the award. The committee ordinarily is
comprised of representatives from the humanities,
social sciences, and natural sciences or mathematics.
4. The award will be announced and the plaque
presented at the Spring Honors Luncheon in May,
2006.
5. Nomination materials or inquiries should
be addressed to Rick McCormick, Director, Honors:
College of Liberal Arts, 115 Johnston Hall (624-5522).
Expected Deadline for receipt
of nominations: March 2006.
